We have photographed weddings across Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur since 2014. In that time we have learned something most venue brochures will never tell you.
Every venue photographs differently.
Not better or worse — differently. The same lawn that looks magical at 5 PM can be harsh and flat at noon. A banquet hall with beautiful chandeliers might have lighting that makes skin tones difficult. A venue with a stunning entrance might have no quiet corner for the couple’s portraits.
None of this means you should pick a different venue. It just means you should know what you are working with — and plan around it.
Here is what we have learned, venue type by venue type.
Luxury Hotels — Taj, JW Marriott, Hyatt, The Lalit
The big hotel properties in Chandigarh are reliable. That is their strength.
What works for photographs: Consistent, controlled lighting. Beautiful lobbies and staircases for portraits. Backup indoor spaces if the weather turns. Staff who have done hundreds of weddings and know how to work around a photography team.
What to plan for: Banquet halls are often warm-lit, which means we bring our own lighting for the ceremony and reception. Many properties have restrictions on where equipment can be placed — worth confirming early. And if you want outdoor portraits, ask about the lawn or poolside access at golden hour, because those slots sometimes get double-booked.
Our tip: Ask the hotel for a 30-minute window at sunset, just for the two of you. Every good hotel has a spot. Most couples never ask, and it is almost always the best set of photographs from the whole day.
Banquet Venues in Zirakpur & Mohali — Sheron, Grand Imperial and others
This belt has become the practical choice for tricity weddings, and the venues have improved a lot.
What works: Space. Real space — for the baraat, for the dhol, for a family of two hundred people who all want to be in the same frame. These venues understand Punjabi weddings because that is what they host every week.
What to plan for: Décor plays a bigger role here than architecture. The venue is often a blank canvas, which means your decorator’s choices will shape how your photographs look far more than the building itself. Talk to your photographer and decorator together, not separately.
Our tip: Ask your decorator to keep the mandap or stage lighting warm and even, not coloured. Coloured uplighting looks dramatic in person and terrible in photographs — it turns faces green and purple, and no amount of editing fully fixes it.
Gurudwaras — Anand Karaj
We shoot a lot of Anand Karaj ceremonies, and they are among the most beautiful weddings to photograph.
What works: The natural light in most Gurudwara halls is soft and generous. The ceremony itself is unhurried, which means real moments have room to happen — a mother watching, a father’s hand on a shoulder, the quiet during the Laavan.
What to plan for: Respect comes first. We work without flash, stay low, and keep distance during the ceremony. Ask your photographer how they work in a Gurudwara before you book — the answer tells you a lot about them.
Our tip: The Anand Karaj usually happens in the morning. Do not schedule a heavy pre-ceremony shoot before it — you will be tired, and it shows. Save the couple portraits for after.
Farmhouse & Open-Air Venues
Beautiful, and worth the extra planning.
What works: Golden hour. Nothing in a hotel matches what open sky does to a photograph an hour before sunset. Fields, trees, open horizons — these give you frames you cannot recreate indoors.
What to plan for: Weather and light both change fast. Once the sun sets at an open venue, everything depends on the lighting setup. Under-lit outdoor venues are the most common reason couples end up disappointed with their reception photographs.
Our tip: Budget for proper venue lighting, not just decorative fairy lights. Ask your decorator specifically about white light for the stage and dining area. Fairy lights are for mood, not for faces.
Destination Weddings — Himachal & Beyond
Many tricity couples now head to the hills — Kasauli, Shimla, Manali, or further.
What works: Landscape. Scale. Photographs that do not look like anyone else’s wedding.
What to plan for: Mountain weather does what it wants. We shot a pre-wedding at Rohtang Pass where the couple got completely soaked in sudden rain — and those turned out to be the best frames of the shoot. But that only works if everyone is prepared for it and relaxed about it.
Our tip: Build a buffer day. If your only shoot day is rained out at 11,000 feet, there is no plan B. With a spare day, there always is.
The Question Nobody Asks the Venue
Whatever venue you choose, ask them one thing:
“What time does the sun hit the main lawn, and is it available then?”
Venue managers rarely get asked this. It is also the single most useful piece of information your photographer will get from the venue — because that thirty-minute window usually produces the photographs you will actually frame and hang on a wall.
