5 Wedding Photography Mistakes Brides Regret (And How to Avoid Them)

Your wedding day lasts a few hours. The photographs last for generations.

Yet after more than 12 years of photographing weddings across Punjab and the Tricity, we keep seeing the same few mistakes — and almost none of them are the photographer’s fault. They happen in the months and hours before the wedding, when couples simply don’t know what to plan for.

Here are the five we see most often, and exactly how to avoid each one.

    1. Booking on Instagram highlights alone

Every photographer’s Instagram shows their best ten frames. That tells you what they can do on a perfect day, in perfect light. It doesn’t tell you what they deliver across an entire wedding — the dim banquet hall, the rushed baraat, the 300-guest reception.

What to do instead: ask to see two or three complete wedding galleries, start to finish. Look at the in-between moments: the family shots, the indoor ceremony, the evening function. Consistency across a whole day is the real test of skill. A studio confident in its work will share full galleries without hesitation.

    2. Not planning for golden hour

The soft, warm light just before sunset — golden hour — lasts roughly 20 minutes. It produces the most flattering couple portraits of the entire day. It is also the most commonly missed, because nobody built it into the schedule.

Punjabi weddings run on their own clock. The Anand Karaj or pheras shift, lunch runs long, relatives arrive late — and by the time anyone thinks about portraits, the sun is gone.

What to do instead: share your full timeline with your photographer at least two weeks before the wedding. Check the sunset time together and protect a 20–30 minute window just for the two of you. Tell one family member it’s non-negotiable.

    3. Getting ready in a dark, cluttered room

Your getting-ready photos usually open your wedding album and film — the first thing everyone sees. Yet most brides get ready in whichever hotel room was free: one small window, harsh ceiling lights, suitcases and food trays everywhere.

What to do instead: choose the room with the biggest window and the most natural light, even if it’s smaller. Ask someone to clear the clutter — bags, bottles, hangers — before your photographer arrives. Keep your outfit, jewellery, kalire and shoes together in one place, so the detail shots can be taken early, calmly and beautifully.

    4. Skipping the family shot list

Punjabi weddings are big, joyful and fast. Group photos happen in a rush between rituals, and your photographer doesn’t know who your favourite masi is, or that your grandparents flew in from abroad. Couples often discover weeks later that someone important is missing from every frame.

What to do instead: write a simple family shot list — which groups, in what order. Parents, grandparents, siblings, then both families together. Then ask one confident cousin from each side to gather people when their group is called. Your photographer handles the posing; your cousin handles the people. It turns a chaotic 40 minutes into a smooth 15.

    5. Not asking who will actually shoot your wedding

This one catches the most couples off guard. Many studios show the founder’s portfolio, then send a junior team on the day. The style you fell in love with may not be the style you receive.

What to do instead: before you book, ask directly:

    • Who exactly will photograph and film our wedding?
    • How many photographers and cinematographers will be there?
    • What backup cameras, lenses and memory cards do you carry?
    • What happens if someone on the team falls ill?

A professional studio will answer every one of these clearly — and put it in writing.

    Planning your wedding from abroad?

Many of the couples we work with plan their wedding from overseas and fly home only for the celebrations. If that’s you, these five points matter even more — you won’t be around to fix things in person.

Schedule a video call with your photographer at least a month ahead. Share your timeline and family shot list in writing. And nominate one family member in India as the day-of point of contact, so small decisions never wait on a phone call across time zones.

    The short version

Book on full galleries, not highlights. Plan for golden hour. Choose a bright room. Make a family list. Know exactly who is shooting.

Get these five right, and your photographs will look the way your wedding felt.
